When in Egyptian captivity, Pharaoh gave the Israelites the land of Goshen to live in. It was there that they were protected from the plagues that devastated the Egyptian people. In Goshen, they were protected from the flies, from the hail, and from the darkness that prevented the Egyptians from seeing anyone or moving about for three days. There was light in Goshen, when all of Egypt was in darkness.
